Vovinam Purposes & Principles
Three Purposes
Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo operates with three purposes:
- To preserve, revive, and develop Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo created by the Founding Grand Master Nguyen Loc in 1938. Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo upholds the indomitable traditional spirit of the nation, fully understanding the two aspects of hardness and softness in human nature, and combines the essence of martial arts from around the world.
- To collect, research, and create martial art techniques to enrich and advance the martial art of Vovinam.
- To train disciples in three aspects: Martial Strength, Martial Art Technique, and Martial Spirit.
Regarding Martial Spirit: Vovinam trains disciples to have a resilient and sturdy body; strong and flexible strength to endure all hardships, overcome illnesses, and keep the body always robust and healthy.
Regarding Martial Art Technique: Vovinam will train disciples in sophisticated techniques for effective self-defense and readiness to defend justice.
Regarding Martial Spirit: Vovinam will cultivate in disciples a noble soul, an unyielding will, a chivalrous temperament, knowing to discipline themselves, live harmoniously among fellow disciples, sacrifice in altruistic life, and become exemplary citizens serving themselves, family, country, and humanity.
Five Principles
To achieve the three purposes mentioned above, the Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo operates according to the following five principles:
- All activities of the Vovinam school are based on a solid foundation: Placing humanity at the core, using moral virtues as guidelines, and employing techniques and a strong will as means.
- Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo is a large family, where disciples love and respect each other. This respect and love are woven into the discipline of the school, forming a strong bond that helps the disciples unite closely to uphold the honor of the school, serving the nation and humanity.
- Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo actively contributes to the educational efforts for youth and adolescents.
- The activities of Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo are apolitical and nonsecular.
- Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo always respects other martial arts.
